Kite/Windsurf Cup January 2015 Langebaan

Hi All,

It is contest time again and this time with a difference.
We as windsurfers have been challenged to show the kiters who is boss on the race course.

Yes, it is possible to race against the kiters.

This format has been tested with the success of the past several Mauritius events and our neighbours in the Indian Ocean have committed to sending several of their sailors and kiters to our side of the world to compete with our boys and girls.

We also have commitment from several other countries who are also interested in becoming part of our community.

The race format is varied with several marks to round per race and includes the following races:
1. Langebaan downwind dash
2. Island run from the yacht club above Pearlies to Cape Sports Centre.
3. Lagoon Dash from Churchhaven around the island to Pearlies.
4. Casino Royal from Cape Sports Centre to Mykonos and
5. The Saldanha Sprint in Saldanha harbour.

Each race is completed with party, prize giving and drinks at various venues.
The nature of each of the races encourages sailors of all levels to take part and the emphasis is on ease of sailing. The past Dashes have seen sailors doing particularly well on freeride equipment so no need to stock up on those expensive slalom boards and sails quite yet.

Kiting South Africa has indicated that they may consider making it their national event as well. All KZN Kiters are invited to attend and show their skills on the course and otherwise.

Dates have been set from Saturday 24 January to Saturday 31 January 2015.
Here is a link for the Downwind Dash [www.langebaandash.co.za].

Arrange travel to arrive on Friday 23 January.

More information may become available and I will continue to update as this occurs.

Notice of race is currently being finalised and I will post that as soon as it is done.

The Dash is a 22 km Comrades Marathon where 200 to 300 kites and windsurfers challenge themselves. Extreme downwind runs over varied conditions ranging from flat, choppy and rolling swell. A test of ones character and ability as finishing the race is accomplishment on its own. The choice of equipment is always a gamble as the wind at the start is usually consistent and strong yet the last two legs are sometimes gusty and inconsistent. [www.langebaandash.co.za]

The Lagoon Dash is a true test of your all round sailing ability. Starting from Langebaan main beach and heading upwind to the top of the lagoon. Once the top mark has been rounded it is a adrenalin filled downwind experience back to Langebaan main beach.

Rabbit Starts
3 Buoys approximately 100m apart make up the start line. The kites pass through the downwind and middle buoy and the boardsailers pass through the middle and upwind buoy. A boat will run along the start line and all competitors can only proceed once the boat has passed them.

Should you only want to enter a single event or a few chosen events (Island Run / Casino Royal / Saldanha Sprint / Lagoon Dash), this is possible @R200 per event . Registration takes place the morning prior to the event. You can also choose to enter the Langebaan downwind Dash separately @ R270.

The Island Run starts at the very top of Langebaan main beach and consists of some long speed runs through chop and absolutely mirror smooth patches. Ending near Friday Island. Depending on time this race may be run more than once.

The Casino Royal tests your ability to hold straight line speed from Friday Island to Mykonos. Test yourself against some of the fastest sailors in South Africa. Depending on time this race may be run more than once.

The Saldanha Sprint will starts with a rabbit start near the Saldanha yacht club and runs across the bay to the iron ore jetty. The course is a beam reach which allows for easy powered up sailing.

Kite Windsurf Cup GPS Speed Challenge!

A added competition taking place throughout the Grinnell / THULE Kite Windsurf Cup will be a speed competition. Riders must supply their own GPS. At any time during the event using their registered equipment, a riders 10 second fastest average speed will be recorded via their own GPS.
Thus competitors can have readings from their event participation or just blasting after or before an event. On the 30th of Jan 2015 all SD cards are handed in, and the stats will be worked out. The rider with the fastest 10 second average speed will be crowned the competitions fastest rider. This will be an added incentive to stay on the water before and after a day’s racing and will keep everyone guessing as to who is the competitions fastest.
